Ni Made Toya

Ni Made Toya is an advocate for traditional salt farming, supporting several salt farmers in Indonesia who harvest salt traditionally and in accordance with Toya Salt standards. Ibu Toya comes from a salt farming family, so she knows the hardships of a salt farmer’s life and the lack of appreciation they get. In 1990, Ibu Toya worked in Japan, where she found that sea salt was in great demand. Not only that, salt farmers also get great recognition, especially in Okinawa, the most popular salt production region, which has a similar method of harvesting salt as in Indonesia. In 2000, she came back to Bali and noticed that there had been no significant change in the appreciation or awareness of Indonesian sea salt. This made her determined to help local farmers. She is confident in the quality of Indonesian salt, which was proven when she won a competition in Japan. She took the win and decided to help farmers so that Indonesian salt becomes famous and farmers’ wages can be competitive and fair. Many salt-producing families are switching due to their economic situation, and she aims to change that.

Ni Made Toya adalah pegiat pertanian garam tradisional, mendukung beberapa petani garam di Indonesia yang memanen garam secara tradisional dan sesuai standar Garam Toya. Ibu Toya berasal dari keluarga petani garam, sehingga ia mengetahui kerasnya hidup seorang petani garam dan rendahnya apresiasi yang mereka dapatkan. Pada tahun 1990, Ibu Toya bekerja di Jepang dan ia menemukan bahwa garam laut sangat diminati. Tak hanya itu, para petani garam juga mendapatkan pengakuan yang besar, terutama di Okinawa, kawasan penghasil garam terpopuler yang memiliki cara memanen garam serupa seperti di Indonesia. Pada tahun 2000, ia kembali ke Bali dan menyadari bahwa tidak ada perubahan signifikan dalam apresiasi atau kesadaran terhadap garam laut Indonesia. Hal ini membuatnya bertekad untuk membantu petani setempat. Ia yakin dengan kualitas garam Indonesia yang terbukti saat ia menjuarai kompetisi di Jepang. Ia mengambil kemenangan tersebut dan memutuskan untuk membantu para petani agar garam Indonesia menjadi terkenal dan upah para petani menjadi kompetitif dan adil. Banyak keluarga produsen garam yang beralih karena situasi ekonomi mereka, dan ia bertujuan untuk mengubah kondisi ini.
